We are all part of a Community, whether we want to be or not. We also believe that we are all responsible for the community we live in. We will strive to instill in youth a sense of social responsibility for people around them, how to be accountable for their actions and decisions, and how those things impact the community around them. We believe that selfless service to others is a key ingredient to a healthy community and a healthy lifestyle.
All youth will be expected to participate in regular and frequent service activities in the greater Silver Valley area. Projects may include helping paint, working at the Humane Society, nursing homes, Habitat for Humanity, etc. Any time we travel to activities, such as our Super Outings, we will seek out service opportunities as part of the trip.
We believe that our international service component is truly a unique opportunity and one that contributes to the innovative program at Daybreak Canyon. By traveling abroad and providing service to those that are dramatically less fortunate can awaken within youth a feeling of caring and responsibility. We also feel it helps youth be more grateful for the things in their own lives that they have and receive from their families and communities.
We plan to go on two international service trips each year. Youth will be encouraged to attend at least one trip prior to graduation. Youth are encouraged to have a passport upon admittance or be in the process of obtaining a passport. Youth will be able to demonstrate a certain competency level in the treatment and use and application of social skills in order to be eligible to participate. Parents and other immediate family members will be invited to attend these trips as well. All trips will be lead by DC staff and staffing ratios will remain the same abroad as at the facility.
We currently have three sites picked out for our service trips- an orphanage in Haiti, an orphanage in Mexico, and a school for children of lepers in India. We are always looking for new and exciting places to lend a hand!
